01Current status

The Cowrie does not currently collect personal data through forms. The newsletter is not yet active and there is no open sign-up. This policy describes the practices that will take effect when sign-ups open, together with the aggregated technical data processing that already takes place.

02Data controller

The controller of the personal data collected through this site is The Cowrie, reachable at: contact@thecowriereport.com.

03Technical browsing data

During your visit to the site, our hosting provider automatically records basic technical data: IP address, browser and device type, operating system, pages accessed, date and duration of the visit. This data is used in aggregated form for statistical and security purposes.

None of this data is used to personally identify a visitor, and none of it is shared with third parties for marketing purposes.

04Newsletter (once active)

When the newsletter becomes active, sign-up will be voluntary and will only require your email address. The data will be processed under the following rules:

  • Sole purpose: delivery of the editorial editions.
  • Legal basis: the data subject's express consent (Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023).
  • No sale or transfer to third parties for marketing purposes.
  • Unsubscribe at any time, through the link at the foot of every email or by direct request.

05Cookies

The site may use strictly necessary cookies for its operation (for example, display preferences). Aggregated analytics cookies may be used to measure audience without personal identification. You can disable cookies at any time in your browser settings.

06Rights of the data subject

Under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, data subjects have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you.
  • Rectify data that is inaccurate or incomplete.
  • Erase data that is no longer required for any of the stated purposes.
  • Object to the processing of your data for specific purposes.

To exercise these rights, send your request to contact@thecowriereport.com. We will respond within the timeframes set by the NDPA 2023.

07Service providers

The operation of the site relies on technical service providers whose role is strictly operational: hosting (Vercel), font delivery (Google Fonts) and, eventually, an email delivery provider once the newsletter is active. These providers do not use the data for purposes other than those authorised.

08Changes to this policy

The Cowrie reserves the right to modify this Privacy Policy. Changes will be published on this page with the date of the last update. In the event of substantial changes involving additional purposes, we will notify you by email if you are subscribed to the newsletter.

09Supervisory authority

If you believe your right to the protection of personal data has been infringed, you can lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), the supervisory authority under the NDPA 2023, at ndpc.gov.ng.
